Jr. High After-School

MAYC's Jr. High After-School Program

The after-school program is focused on providing a safe and fun space for Jr. High students in the hours immediately following their school day. This is a FREE program open until 5:30pm on school days. We offer fun recreational activities, social & emotional development support, snacks, and homework help.

The program is made up of free time as well as structured activities that include:

  • Educational Supports
  • Health & Life Skills
  • Recreation & Physical Activity
  • Social & emotional development
  • Character and Citizenship
  • Creative Arts & Expression

Date & Time: The program will begin Tuesday, September 6th and will operate on all days that school is in session, including the monthly early dismissal days.  The program runs from 3:25pm-5:30pm with the exception of the monthly early dismissal days when the program will be open from 2:25-5:30pm.

Transportation: MAYC is located at 700 W. Main and students will walk from the JR. High to MAYC when weather permits.  If there is inclement weather, MAYC will pick up students in the circle drive pick up line in a MAYC vehicle.

Registration and membership are required.

Educational Supports

  • Students who attend the program will have access to tutors from UI EDU 201 as well as adults who can provide some homework help and guidance on study habits.  Academic achievement is important to MAYC and our supports should be in conjunction with other supports offered by their teachers and school.

Health & Life Skills

  • All students will have access to a daily nutritious snack and we will offer activities to encourage and teach life skills like cooking, cleaning and car maintenance.

Recreation & Physical Activity

  • There will be recreation opportunities daily including sports like basketball, access to the playground, walks to local parks and more.

Social & Emotional Development

  • The wholistic development and growth of students is an important part of our program and we focus on the social and emotional development through age-appropriate conversations and activities.

Character & Citizenship

  • MAYC values building character and helping others and we are committed to this through regular activities exploring what character means and monthly community service projects.

Creative Arts & Expression

  • MAYC students will have opportunities to participate in creative projects including sewing, painting, drawing & creating music.

Service Learning

In addition to the academic support services, we provide service learning opportunities.  In 2020 we took teens to Crowley Farms to help them stock & clean.
